Physiotherapy

Physiotherapeutics is a great natural way to build strength, reduce tension, facilitate injury healing, balance muscle imbalance and more. Physiotherapeutics in our office may include one or a combination of the following:

Therapeutic Exercise

Therapeutic Exercises are movements that are designed to correct impaired areas of the body, or to maintain a current state of wellbeing. These exercises may vary from selected activities, which help to improve musculoskeletal function by using movements to specific muscles or parts of the body to general and vigorous activities that can return an individual to their peak performance and physical condition. This is all achieved through endurance training, resistance training and flexibility training.

Therapeutic exercise focuses on:
  • Mobilizing Joints
  • Improving Circulation
  • Improving Balance
  • Promoting Relaxation
  • Improving Muscle Strength
  • Releasing Contracted Muscles
  • Enabling Ambulation
  • Improving Athletic Performance
  • And much more!

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS)

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) also known as Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) allows the facilitation of muscle contraction using small electrical impulses. This type of therapy uses an electrical current to simulate the same electrical impulses that are activated during normal exercise. By passively contracting the muscle, the body responds in much the same way as during normal exercise. The unit can send electrical impulses through the skin to underlying nerves, stimulating the contraction and relaxation of the muscle in a rhythm similar to normal exercise. It is great for pain control and muscle training (tone, strength and contouring).

Ultrasound Therapy

Ultrasound Therapy is used for the treatment of musculoskeletal problems. It is especially beneficial for tendonitis, bursitis, plantar fasciitis, and scar tissue adhesions. This type of therapy assists with the decrease of inflammation as well as the increase of blood flow in order to speed up the healing process. It also helps to decrease swelling and edema.

Intersegmental Traction / Spinal Traction

Intersegmental traction is an effective chiropractic therapy that induces passive motion into the spine for the purpose of stretching spinal joints and ligaments while increasing mobility. Intersegmental traction helps to gently and effectively reestablish normal range of motion to your spine. It also facilitates muscle relaxation to significantly reduce muscle spasms. Whether you're a professional athlete, runner, or just someone who often exercises, the stress and trauma to your spine can be debilitating, especially with age and wear and tear.

At our office, Intersegmental Traction is delivered through the use of a traction table. You lay down on your back on the table, and the table's rollers (which are under the surface of the table) are turned on. These rollers are adjusted depending on your condition, and work to gently and specifically elongate and stretch your spinal joints and muscles. This helps to reduce muscle spasms and increase the range of motion of your spine..

Hot/Cold Therapy

Hot/Cold Therapy can be used to speed up healing as well as reduce inflammation. Depending on your current condition, Dr. Woodruff will create and individualized care plan for you. Hot/Cold Therapy is used in our office to address muscle spasms, soreness and pain. It is also used to induce relaxation. After your condition is evaluated, Dr. Woodruff will decide whether hot or cold therapy is best for you.

Active/Passive Stretching

Stretching is one of the many important factors of therapy. Stretching should also be incorporated into your daily regime of activity. By stretching, you increase blood flow, help your joints move through full range of motion and decrease the chance of injury.

Dr. Woodruff will assist you by showing you the proper way to isolate specific muscles of your body, and she will also create a stretching program that best suits your current condition.
